East Africa Television (EATV) Head of Marketing, Alex Galinoma |
Commenting yesterday in Dar es Salaam, East Africa Television
(EATV) Head of Marketing, Alex Galinoma said youth have the power to
bring about change through their vote.
“It is their constitutional right to vote...we are encouraging them to utilise it,” he said.
Galinona also announced the launch of a pop song by a leading
Hiphop group (Weusi) meant to encourage youth participation in the
elections.
“The song is part of our ongoing Zamu yako campaign that is meant
to encourage the youth to participate in the elections,” Galinoma
explained.
“This song will largely sensitise youth on the importance of voting and their general participation in the election,” he added.
“The campaign targets young people aged between 18 and 40 years
taking into consideration that almost 68 per cent of the country’s
population fall in that group,” he said.
He encouraged youth to stop complaining about the hardships of
life and to instead, use their vote to elect leaders of their choice.
Galinoma said East Africa radio has conducted a random survey which
revealed that most youth in universities and elsewhere are not
interested in voting, this despite their being registered to vote.
“We want to encourage youth to vote for leaders of their choice so
that they don’t complain when they lack important social services. We
want them to understand that every single vote makes a difference,”
emphasised Galinoma.
“Voting is power, voting makes the difference between complaining
about the governmental system and being an active part in its
reconstruction,” he said.
He summed up urging the youth to; "go and register as voters and
know that your vote will make a difference by voting for good leaders,
make sure that you use your democratic right by voting on the day of the
election."
On February 11, this year, EATV in collaboration with East Africa
Radio launched the campaign dubbed ‘Zamu Yako 2015’ aimed to sensitise
youth to take part in the General Election.
Briefing reporters on the campaign, EA Radio Head of Programmes,
Nasser Kingu said the campaign seeks to raise awareness among youth on
the importance of registering in the voter’s permanent registration and
subsequent participation in the elections later this year.
“The educative campaign will be aired at different times every week,” he said.
“It will motivate, educate and remind youth on the importance of
engaging in elections…youth must know the importance of choosing a
leader of their choice,” he explained.
