The
Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) has confirmed a new date for the Mainland
Premier League, with the 2015/2016 season now set to kick off on September 12,
this year.
The
top-flight league was initially scheduled to get underway on August 22 but the
TFF postponed it indefinitely to pave way for national team, Taifa Stars’
preparations for the African Cup of Nations qualifiers.
The
Stars will play host to West African giants Nigeria on match-day two of the
continental qualifying campaign at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam on
September 5.
TFF
Media and Communications Officer, Baraka Kizuguto, said yesterday that the
league will commence a week after the Stars’ date with Nigeria, with the
traditional Community Shield match between defending champions Young Africans
and last season’s runners- up Azam due on August 22.
“The
Vodacom Premier League (VPL) will commence on September 12 instead of August 22
so as to give Charles Mkwasa an opportunity to continue with his programme
ahead of the Taifa Stars vs. Nigeria fixture,” said Kizuguto.
Kizuguto
said the league fixture will be altered to correspond with the new kick-off
date, adding that matches will be played during weekends and in midweek.
“There
would be no league match on the weekend of October 25, to give room for the
general elections for President and legislators,” he noted.
“We
have written to inform Premier League clubs on the new kickoff date, and that
there is no change as far as the transfer window is concerned.”
Stars
coach Mkwasa will name his team shortly after the Charity Shield match, and the
Tanzanian outfit will head off to Europe for a weeklong training tour.
It
was earlier reported that Taifa Stars would pitch a camp in Turkey, but the
source said it will be in another European country, which he also declined to
reveal
